  1. What is palm wax?
Palm wax is an ecologically renewable product made from wax distilled from the leaves of palm trees grown in Malaysia. Paraffin, on the other hand, is distilled from petroleum and is then purified by sweating or solvent refining. Paraffin, which is not a true wax, consists mainly of a mixture of saturated straight-chain solid hydrocarbons.

  2. What are the benefits of palm wax?
Palm oil is a renewable resource and, like soy oil, the use of palm oil to make candles benefits the farmers who grow and harvest the palm leaves used in the production of the wax. Palm wax candles are very hard, smooth and dry (but also Handmade Palm Wax Candles have a "soft" feeling) and thus can withstand summer heat without bending or melting and doesn’t have an "oily" feel.

  3. How well do palm wax candles burn?
Because of the higher melting point of palm wax (131° - 136°) than paraffin (95° - 100°), palm wax candles burn more slowly and more cleanly than paraffin wax candles. Our palm wax candles are made from all natural ingredients, including all cotton wicks, giving a better burn. You won’t get soot marks on your walls or ceilings with our palm wax candles provided you follow the burning instructions. Our testing shows that palm wax candles burn at least 50% longer than paraffin candles although some burn as much as twice as long.

  4. How do I get the longest burn from my candle?
To get the best burn from both pillar and container candles, burn the candle long enough the first time you light it so a wax pool forms that covers almost the entire top of the candle. With pillar candles you need to leave a rim of about 1/8". With container or jar candles the initial burn should create a burn pool that covers the entire surface of the jar. Extinguish the candle when it reaches this point. Depending on the diameter of the candle or container, the initial burn time may be anywhere from 1 hour up to 5 or 6 hours. Subsequently you should plan to burn the candle until it reaches the ″memory pool″ you created with the first burn. Generally this is longer than the first burn. Following these guidelines will ensure a cleaner and longer lasting candle. You must also remember to reduce the wick to 1/8" before each burn and keep all candles away from drafts as much as possible.

  5. Why do you call your candles "usable works of art"?
Palm wax, unlike any other waxes, forms crystals on the surface of the candle as it cools. Different molds contribute to the creation of different crystal patterns. The dye and fragrance combination used in a candle also influence the crystallizing patterns. Thus, every candle is beautiful and unique, but not too beautiful to burn!

  6. Does Candles by Carolyn sell any other type of candle?
Yes. Candles by Carolyn also makes hand made soy pillars and soy container candles. Popular are our "Travel Tins,” made of 100% natural soy wax and cotton wicks in 4 oz. and 6 oz. sizes. They are perfect for sticking in a suitcase to burn when traveling (even though they try, hotel and motel rooms can sometimes be less than odor free), and are welcome as a house gift. Our soy pillars, jars and Travel Tins come in the same large variety of fragrances and colors as our palm wax candles. Soy candles burn cleanly and completely and much longer than traditional paraffin candles.
